How to master the Inner Game of Music

Hi guys, really wanna thank you for hanging out here. Without you here, it’s like talking to a blank wall. Your support is what’s keeping me blogging.

One of my passions is playing music. specifically a genre called Progressive Metal. I was recommended by a fellow muso and ex-bandmate this ‘kickass’ book called the Inner Game of Music.

Inner game of music

This book was written by Tim Gallwey and Barry Green.

Tim Gallwey – Tim has also wrote the infamous Inner Game of Tennis. This is a must have personal development book for every Tennis player.

Barry Green – Barry is an orchestral, solo double bass player, tutor and was the principal bassist for the Cincinnati Symphony.
He was blown away by the results of his brother’s skiing improved after he had read one of Tim Gallwey’s inner game books… and Barry was better at skiing but got his bum kicked by a ski novice brother.
Barry then decided to apply Tim’s Inner Game of Tennis book techniques to his music playing. No surprise he improved tremendously as a player and teacher!!

Suzuki method

The Suzuki method was created by by Japanese violinist Shin’ichi Suzuki  in the 1950s.
Mozart incorporated this learning technique as he surrounded with excellent musical performances and environment from birth.
The Suzuki method incorporates learning by ear/aural over reading musical notation. The method is usually applied to children at a young age. Based on Suzuki’s observation, children usually speak before they write or read. Students are expected to learn the pieces of music by ear before learning to read them. Initially it was adapted just for violin but they have incorporated other instruments such as the guitar, flute, etc. No surprise why you see little Asian kids on YouTube ripping up hard Chopin and Mozart pieces with ease. They have been trained the Suzuki method!!!

Suzuki method – Pros cons

The upside learning the Suzuki method is that it heightens a students aural and pitch correction. Downside is that they are bad at reading music. Which is probably why they’ve changed the style of learning on most ‘Suzuki based music schools’ by emphasizing on more sight reading.

Reducing stage fright

The inner game of music also helps with reducing ‘stage fright’ by teaching increasing intensity on focused playing of the instrument.

Mind coping techniques

They teach mind focus techniques to incorporate on dealing with doubt and how to deal with a screw up on a performance and recovery.

Noted users

John Petrucci – A virtuoso American guitar player, songwriter and infamously known founding member of Progressive Metal band Dream Theater.
Petrucci highly regards this book as a must have in a Musos library.

Barry Green – Co-Author of the book, an orchestral, solo double bass player, tutor and was the principal bassist for the Cincinnati Symphony.

Hope you enjoyed reading this post. I highly recommend reading this book if you’re serious on being a better muso. Also check out the FREE GIFT (E-BOOK) as a thank you present for dropping by!!
